Edinburgh has been a popular city for backpackers for years and is known as the world’s Festival City. So what makes Edinburgh such an epic destination for backpackers? It’s a very affordable city to visit, has plenty of free things to see and do and is easy to get around on foot with a photo opportunity around every corner! 1. Cheap pubs and nightclubs

Edinburgh has an array of cheap pubs and nightclubs with pints starting from less than £2 and shots from just £1! You’ll find most of these budget bars in the Cowgate area, and we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the best budget pubs for backpackers here.

2. Free Walking Tours

There are plenty of free walking tours available in Edinburgh; Sandmans has one of the most popular free walking tours in Edinburgh and for Harry Potter fans there is a free walking tour with The Potter Trail. Please note, the tour guides expect to be tipped, however you decide what to pay, which can work out a lot cheaper in the end.

3. Free activities

Walking through Dean Village, visiting the National Museum of Scotland, the National Gallery of Modern Art and Harry Potter hotspots around the city are all free activities. There are so many more free things to do in Edinburgh it would take a whole other blog post to list!

4. Hiking options

Arthurs Seat is a popular and easy hike which offers some of the best views of the Edinburgh. Calton Hill is another easy hike with great views across Edinburgh and Fife. You can easily squeeze both of these hikes into one day and best of all they both start from the centre of the city!

5. Excellent public transport

Edinburgh does public transport right- buses are spacious, clean and abundant in the city. For only £4 you can purchase an all-day ticket with Lothian buses and explore Edinburgh. There are also two train stations in the city centre: Waverley and Haymarket. You can jump on a train to go to Glasgow for the day for a mere £13 return!

6. Cheap and delicious pub grub

Edinburgh has an amazing Scottish food scene. Luckily Scottish cuisine consists of the likes soup, pies and shortbread- backpacker staples!

Edinburgh is one of the most instagrammable cities in the world. You won’t need to wander far to get ‘the phone.’ Our favourite places to photograph include Dean Village, The Vennel, Victoria Street and Scotts Monument!
